Another major aspect of the class was talking about what makes or breaks a Powerpoint presentation. Some of the key points here included:
• Use the key notes section
• Use lots of visuals, “a picture paints a thousand words”
• Use good images, not cheesy clipart
• Don’t steal
• Design matters
• Use a sans serif font
• Incorporate multimedia, audio, sound effects (these links are from the video sent to our class by Rushton Hurley from Next Vista.org)
• Always face the audience
• Don’t have tons of text, if you need all the information to be provided to students give them a print out for reference rather than having everything on your slides.
For some more great tips, refer to Alvin's Educational Technology Blog to see How to Create a Great Powerpoint.
By following these basic guidelines, preteachers like us can change how classroom presentations are done. We can make things more interesting and fun for our students! What is worse than sitting through an hour of someone reading off a screen filled with black text and a white background? Let us all consider these points when creating presentations in the future.
